Oregon National Parks
One way to get away from it all and spend some time in unspoiled wilderness is to visit Oregon National Parks. Crater Lake National Park is located in the southern part of the state with its main feature being the lake for which it is named. In May of 1902, this park was the sixth one established in the United States. Crater Lake is Oregon's only national park and is located at the site of what used to be Mount Mazama, a volcano that was destroyed.
In addition to being the sole National Park in the state Crater Lake National Park boasts the deepest lake in the entire country and second deepest in North America. The incredible depth of this body of water was caused when the caldera was formed thousands of years ago. The surface of the lake has a USGS elevation of 6178 feet while the rim is estimated between 7,000 and 8,000 feet. Often the water of Crater Lake is a brilliant blue color, making it a sight to behold.
When you visit Crater Lake National Park you will find a great variety of outdoor activities to enjoy. The park boasts a variety of trails for hiking as well as camp sites. Fishing enthusiasts will love the unlicensed, unlimited fishing permitted at the lake. Experts believe no fish species are native to the lake, however until 1941 the lake was stocked with salmon and trout. Today these fish species flourish on their own and the lake does not need to be stocked. You can also swim in the lake, or take a relaxing tour by boat.
Visiting Oregon National Parks is certainly a memorable experience. There are points along the rim of Caldera Lake which you can reach by car on Rim Drive. This driving trail spans 33 miles and climbs an elevation of 3800 feet. Mt. Scott is the highest area in Crater Lake National Park, with an elevation of 8929 feet. If you want to reach the summit, you'll need to hike approximately 2 miles from the beginning of the Rim Drive trail to get there. The park can be accessed fully in the summer, however snowfall in the other seasons cause closures of roads and trails.
