Nevada National Parks

Are you planning a vacation and want a destination that is off the beaten path but not too far from civilization? If so consider Nevada National Parks. The state of Nevada in the American Southwest is home not only to the glittering city of Las Vegas, but also to the Great Basin National Park. The Great Basin National Park was created in 1986, making it a young park when compared to many of the others across the country. Before this the Lehman Caves National Monument was the only government protected landmark in the nearby area.

The Great Basin National Park may not be the most popular in the country but it still has a lot to offer. The main reason people come to this park is to marvel at Wheeler Peak. Here there are permanent fields of snow and a glacier. It is hard to believe that only 250 miles up from Vegas lies this amazing natural landmark. Also, the park offers great scenery and a variety of wildlife to watch out for. The mountains in the distance and breathtaking desert views are a welcome variation from the flat plains covering most of Nevada.

This national park can be reached via US 50 which has been nicknamed the Loneliest Road in America. This road is the only road crossing Nevada into Utah for more than 210 miles. When you reach the entrance of the park, you are able to enjoy a drive spanning ten miles that climbs into the mountains. This ten mile stretch provides a great opportunity to marvel at the gorgeous natural scenery which includes desert, canyons and even forest. The snowy peaks are 6,000 feet higher than the park entrance and as you advance on the upward trail you will find distinct climate changes and landscape differences.

Although not one of the Nevada National Parks, you might also want to visit the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. This attraction draws thousands of tourists annually because of the temperate year round weather and gorgeous scenery. Fishing, boating, swimming and camping are all popular activities that take place here. While hiking is possible here it is not one of the more popular activities at this recreation area. If you are seeking a fun lake getaway for your family the Lake Mead National Recreation Area just might be the perfect destination.
